Roy Grimes, president of the National Archery in the Schools Program, has been awarded the 2019 Whitetails Unlimited Hunting Heritage Award. Grimes received the award as a result of his leadership in establishing and expanding NASP® , which has introduced archery to millions of children in thousands of schools.
“Roy Grimes has been a tireless advocate for NASP® , and everyone in the archery, hunting, and conservation industries are better for it,” said WTU President Jeff Schinkten. “Looking back, this was such a great idea; but that idea was successful only because of the hard work by Roy and everyone at NASP® . Not every student will take up archery or bowhunting as a life-long activity, but every student benefits from NASP® . For the many students that do continue with archery, we all benefit from the solid foundation of safety and responsibility that is taught as part of the National Archery in the Schools Program.”
The Hunting Heritage Award is presented by Whitetails Unlimited in recognition of leadership and accomplishment in the areas of conservation, education, and the preservation of the hunting tradition – the essence of the mission of Whitetails Unlimited. It is the most prominent award presented by Whitetails Unlimited to an individual in the outdoor industry.
The National Archery in the Schools Program is an in-school archery program aimed at improving educational performance among students in grades 4 to 12. Through this program students learn focus, self-control, discipline, patience, and life lessons required to be successful in both the classroom and in life. NASP® started in 21 Kentucky middle schools in 2002, and because of its success it quickly became a national program. After 16 years NASP® has introduced millions of students across the U.S. and a dozen other countries to a lifetime sporting activity, teaching them the satisfaction that comes from setting goals, working on skills, and accomplishing objectives.
“We’re extremely proud to present this award to Roy Grimes and NASP® They have shown a consistent commitment to helping others participate in the outdoors, and through their hard work and imagination they have accomplished great things by leading in a great industry,” said Schinkten, who presented the award at the Archery Trade Association show in Louisville, Kentucky. “Whitetails Unlimited is a proud, long-time supporter of NASP® , and we’re honored to be able to recognize this outstanding ambassador of the conservation community.”
