-Brennan Stephens – NASP®® is relatively young, starting in 2002. Archery in elementary, middle, and high schools is new compared to sports like baseball, basketball, and football. However, NASP® has had a profound effect on so many fellow archers. I have seen firsthand the effect that archery can have on people.
Nearly anyone can shoot archery, even those who have never played sports such as basketball and baseball. Archery provides the most level playing field in my opinion. I have shot with fellow archers who found that archery is something that they can do well. This gives them an important confidence boost that they need. Confidence is contagious inside of your own life.

Archery is great because the learning curve allows archers to see great early success, and just when the learning curve steepens, the individual is hooked on archery. Archery often gives someone who has never had something they excel at, a sport that is a great balance of potential success and something they can do for the rest of their lives. NASP® also provides a hobby that can quickly develop into a love for the outdoors.
- 58% of participating students say they feel more connected to their school
- 40% of students report they are more engaged in the classroom
- 91% of students pursue (or want to pursue) outdoor activities
- NASP has awarded over $2.5 million in scholarships
All of this has been accomplished by NASP® and this is a great representation of how NASP® has influenced so many students. (Data from www.naspschools.org)
A Word of Thanks
I think it is important for me to thank everyone involved with NASP from parent volunteers and coaches to the leadership of NASP. NASP has given you a chance to make a difference with every student you interact with and I have met many coaches that truly are making a difference I would like to say thank you.
Brennan is a 2022 NASP® student contributor. Watch for his future submissions.
