Alayna Musson, February – Confidence can take you far—both in archery and in life.
While confidence in archery may seem different from everyday confidence, the two are closely connected. In archery, confidence helps you stay calm before a tournament, achieve higher scores, and perform at your best. But the confidence you gain through archery extends beyond the sport—it becomes a skill you can use in many areas of life.
Ways to Build Confidence in Archery
On the Line:
If you ever hesitate before releasing an arrow because something feels off, take a moment to reset. Breathe, refocus, and trust yourself. As long as you follow your aim point, you have a great chance of hitting the bullseye!
At the Target:
It’s normal to feel nervous when talking to other archers at the target, but there’s no harm in getting to know them. Building connections with fellow competitors can make you feel more comfortable and relaxed while shooting. A simple conversation can turn an intimidating experience into an enjoyable one.
Before the Tournament:
Tournament nerves are common, but don’t let them overwhelm you. Take a deep breath and focus on the positives—think about the accomplishments and experiences that will come from this event.
One of my favorite ways to calm down is square breathing:
- Inhale for four counts.
- Hold your breath for four counts.
- Exhale for four counts.
- Hold again for four counts.
- Repeat as needed.
This simple breathing exercise can help you stay calm and focused before stepping onto the shooting line.
After the Tournament:
Many archers leave a tournament feeling like they didn’t perform well, but that’s not the right mindset to have. Instead of dwelling on mistakes, shift your focus. Enjoy a fun activity after the tournament and remind yourself that every experience helps you improve. Be confident in your performance and know that with each tournament, you’re building more confidence and skill for the future. Don’t let negative thoughts take over—believe in yourself!
Confidence Beyond Archery
If you develop confidence in archery, you’ll naturally build confidence in other areas of life—whether at school, work, home, or in your future career. Archery isn’t just about hitting targets; it’s about developing skills that will help you succeed in real life.
So wherever you go, remember to carry your confidence with you. It will take you far.
